For our first post – we thought it would be fitting to include some important information for our listing members. One of your new members was kind enough to send us an email and share some of his 5+ years of vacation rental management knowledge.
The internet is undoubtedly the most important tool available to vacation rental owners and managers – but there are some unscrupulous people out there. Wayne Smith, owner of the Vancouver Vacation suites – Deep Cove listing on Mimbeo.com (his website: http://www.coveviewaccommodation.blogspot.com/) shared the following information:
One thing that has bothered me with web ads is the scam artists. I have learned to recognize them in a few ways including;
- A poorly contrived story such as: “i am visiting your county” (notice the non-use of upper case text)
- During email communication the scammer can try to intimidate by saying they are a “Barrister”
In the beginning I was nearly taken in before realizing what was going on. I got some advice from friends.
- I listened to my bank managers advice regarding bad check deposits
- I learned how scammers send a bad check as a deposit and then cancel their booking – expecting a return of their deposit in a good check from me.
I decided after that first run in with a scammer that cash only on arrival would be my policy, and its worked great! I never take deposits. No one has ever complained about that. And I may have missed one no show booking in five years…TAKE THAT SCAMMERS!
